Finding Fruit

A couple weeks ago, the young women that I work with in our church youth group were searching for a service project to do in the community. They came across the Real Life Center U-Pick program where a portion of the berries picked are given to needy families in Fayette County. Unfortunately, at that time the fruit wasn't quite ripe but I kept it in the back of my mind because I knew this was something that I personally wanted to do.

Real Life Center

The Real Life Center is an non-profit organization that helps residents of Fayette and Coweta counties who are in need of food, clothing, and financial assistance. Some of the food supply is grown and pruned by professional gardeners volunteering their expertise and time. It is harvested by community members like you and me. This summer marks the orchard's third year and second productive U-pick season.

Picking in the Orchard

While driving down Highway 74 and approaching the Dogwood Church we spotted the U-Pick sign. We entered the complex and followed the parking lot to the left where we came upon the U-Pick parking sign. Picking is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Depending on the day and ripeness of the fruit, you can keep 1/3 to 1/5 of the berries and the rest is donated to needy families in the community. When we went we chose to pick blackberries and picked about 8 pound of berries and got to take home 2 1/2 pounds. When you go, I would suggest bringing a brown paper bag, a Tupperware, or a clam shell container to bring your own berries home in.
