Why is My Chimney Leaking?
There are many factors to a chimney’s construction that could cause a leak. I will list these common reasons so you can have a better idea of what is causing your chimney to leak.
- The most common problem is a flashing failure. Flashing is installed at the base of the chimney to keep the water and moisture from entering the home. When flashing fails, water is admitted and can cause water damage in the home.
- Chimney cap failure. If the chimney cap fails, that can cause major leaks into the home. E.M. Blue sizes and builds custom chimney caps! If you need a new chimney cap installed, call E.M. Blue Inc. and they’ll come out to size up your chimney and give an estimate on a new chimney cap.
- Leaking bricks can cause chimneys to allow water into the home. Freezing then melting temperatures can cause damage to brick and mortar which, in turn, can lead to them causing leaks. E.M. Blue seals brick chimneys with sealant to bypass this problem.
Chimney Repair in Peachtree City
The homeowner had a very high chimney. He could see that it was rotted out below the cap. The builders had simply used untreated lumber with no stucco or anything to protect it from the elements above the stucco line. Over the years, the wood had rotted away. He wanted it replaced with a more durable material such as Hardie board. We did an estimate on his roof and bid to replace all the rotted lumber with Hardie board.
We had to build up five tiers of scaffolding to get up to the right height. Once we were up there, we removed the spark arrestor, the shroud, and the old cap. These were all in good shape so we lowered them down to a safe place. We then removed all the rotted lumber and replaced it with Hardie board.
Evan Carignan had a very high chimney that he could see was rotted out below the cap but above the stucco line, the builders had simply used untreated lumber with no stucco or anything to protect it from the elements, over the years the wood had rotted away. He wanted it replaced with a more durable material such as Hardie board. We then framed the inside of the hollow chimney and decked over it with plywood for strength. We do this on all chimney jobs. We found out while we were up there that the woodpeckers had chewed a number of holes in the stucco, so we filled all those holes at the same time with a much tougher material. We then painted everything to match and replaced the cap, shroud, and spark arrestor.
In addition to fixing his chimney, we also cleaned out his gutters and replaced several sections of rotted fascia. He was very pleased with the work we did. The job went very well because he was an easy client to work with and we completed it in a timely manner.
